Our Capability

The backbone of a transformed grid

Substations are where the energy transition becomes physical — connecting renewables, stabilising flows, and routing power across thousands of kilometres of network.

Elecnor Australia delivers high-voltage substations as a full EPC scope — from front-end engineering and detailed design through procurement, civil works, electrical installation, primary plant integration and commissioning.

Our work spans AIS and hybrid substations at transmission and sub-transmission voltages, including the connection assets behind utility-scale wind, solar and battery storage projects. We integrate large primary plant — phase-shifting transformers, synchronous condensers, power transformers, shunt reactors and capacitor banks — into network configurations that have to perform from day one.

Backed by Elecnor Group's 60 years of EPC delivery across more than 50 countries, our local teams combine global engineering depth with the regional workforce, supply chains and stakeholder relationships that complex Australian projects demand.

Buronga Substation · NSW

One of the largest and most complex substations in the Southern Hemisphere

As Transgrid's construction partner on EnergyConnect, we delivered the Buronga substation — the main hub of Australia's largest interconnector, linking NSW, South Australia and Victoria.

  • 15 ha Site footprint — equivalent to 21 soccer fields
  • 24,000 m³ Concrete poured for foundations & structures
  • 5 × PSTs Phase-shifting transformers in parallel — a world first
  • 150 → 800 MW Capacity uplift on final energisation
"The scale and engineering complexity of this substation is unlike anything else in Australia. Working alongside our delivery partners across civil, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines, we overcame engineering challenges to integrate highly specialised equipment from around the world." — Felipe Delgado, Elecnor Australia EnergyConnect Project Director
